Workplace English Language & Literacy (WELL) Minimize

What is it?
The Workplace English Language and Literacy program is an Australian government initiative to assist workplace training where language, literacy or numeracy support is needed. Through the program, enterprises can access government funding for the delivery of accredited training.

Who can access WELL training funding?
Enterprises, representative bodies (employer organisations and trade unions), local governments and registered training organisations (RTOs) are eligible to apply for WELL funding.

What can WELL training funding be used for?
The WELL programme provides training that is integrated with vocational training and tailored to the needs of the workplace. Training programs are designed to meet the needs of both the company and the workers. By building workers' language, literacy and numeracy skills in tandem with vocational training, WELL training can:

  • Increase workforce flexibility and responsibility;
  • Support productivity and efficiency initiatives;
  • Build quality assurance processes;
  • Improve health and safety in the workplace;
  • Foster workforce confidence and morale;
  • Encourage communication, consultation and team work; and
  • Create a training culture in the workplace.

What are the program requirements?
Applications for WELL training are considered by DEST at State/Territory level. Application cut-off dates vary between jurisdictions. Check the DEST website for application timelines.
The WELL program requires funding recipients to contribute at least 25% of the training costs. Approved training providers must be used and regular reports provided to DEST.

How do I make the most of WELL training?

The key to successful WELL training is developing and implementing a program that truly meets organisational, workplace and worker needs. To do this you will need a good understanding of the organisation's training needs and workforce profile, and a strong partnership between the employer and the training provider.

WELL worth it: PMP Printing has achieved significant improvements in teamwork, communication with internal customers and use of information technology in its second year of the Australian Government’s Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) training program in Queensland.
